Salute
by Caitlin Morski
Here’s to the mothers, the daughters, the Brides
Who followed the rules while biding their time
Waiting for the rest of the world to realize
Freedom for all could be seen through their eyes.
Looking around, seeing cages and bars,
Seeing their goal shine like the North Star.
There’s a way that feels right, and it’s worth fighting for
Even while others keep slamming the doors
Raising their voices and printing the words.
The truth isn’t useful if you cannot be heard,
But when you’re hands are tied, you use what you’ve got,
So with courage, with truth and conviction they fought.
They held their breaths, waiting, prayed for release.
With votes being cast, solutions with peace.
When the last vote came in, they let out a cheer.
The battle had lasted more than one hundred years.
So here’s to the mothers, the daughters, the Brides
Who followed the rules while biding their time
Waiting for the rest of the world to realize
Freedom for all could be seen through their eyes.
Yes, Freedom for all could be seen in their eyes.
