Did We Get There Yet?

By Kathryn Morski

Am                                                                           F
A woman with a face like the prow of a ship drives by in her Daddy’s Chevrolet.
Am                                                                      F
She’s been waiting at the dock ‘most all of her life.  Only seen the boats sailing away.
AM                                                F                                     Am                        G
And her Daddy held the promise like a hope of salvation when their life seemed hard and grim.
Am                                           F                                  E
If they worked enough, they could have it all.   Now she’s driving to the graveyard
E7
for a chat with him,

Am
(Singing,)  “Daddy, did we get there yet?
F
Did we make the grade?  Did we win the bet?
Am
Daddy, did we get there yet?
F                             G                               Am
Daddy, Daddy, Daddy did we get there yet?”

Well she’s asking him the questions that she always held back,
letting loose what she buried deep inside.
And she’s thinking that it might be her turn at the wheel after
always being taken for a ride.
She is wondering how she swallowed a prescription for disaster when she
only wanted relief.
And she’s wondering, when you’re steering by all the right stars,
how you end up with a life that’s mostly work and grief.

  CHORUS

    F
She’s setting sail on an ocean of a thousand old dreams,
   Am
Setting fire to the past and its freight.
   F
Setting down all the baggage from a world that only says,
   Am                               G
“You want Heaven?  You got to wait.”

Well, she’s dried her tears and she’s blown her nose, and she tells him goodbye and she leaves.
She loves him, though she’s sorry that he never saw through all the lies he was taught to perceive.
And she smiles as she looks out on a life that fits her.  She can build it with her own two hands,
And she’s grateful for the vision and the sense of herself.  After all of these years, she finally understands!

CHORUS
