In Escanaba
by Kathryn Morski
In Escanaba there's a new city hall where the county's first bank used to stand
There's a lighthouse museum in the city park and a new Wal-Mart center is planned
Old men at the House of Ludington tell tales of the rum running days
And the council's willing to approve anything as long as somebody else pays.
In Escanaba there's a carriage ride past the big houses lining the bay
And the art center brings music and dreams to the people who live here today
There's a mile of downtown and a shopping mall, fine restaurants and seven drive throughs
And the movies have moved to an eight-plex cave, but the kids still have nothing to do
It's a small town trying to be a city
Doing all the things that cities do
But the kids move away to the factory towns
Say they'll move back home when they reach sixty-two
In Escanaba there are rabid packers fans with a few staunch lions thrown in
And the people complain that the state capitol thinks we're really part of Wisconsin
All the schools are let out for opening day 'cause the guys go to camp to hunt deer
And the folks who visit from the big cities say, "You're so lucky to be livin' here!"
